Pergola Builders Sydney

An insulated pergola and Axion clad walls that turn this pergola into an outdoor room with a spotted gum floor

A pergola is the easiest room you’ll ever add to your home. No knocking out walls, no extension drama — just a structure that turns a hot, unused corner of the yard into the part of the house everyone actually wants to be in.

We’re Tony and Dean — a father-and-son team who design and build pergolas across Sydney, Wollongong and the Southern Highlands. We’ve spent years building decks, stairs and outdoor spaces for local families, and a pergola is often the piece that ties the whole thing together: shade over the deck, cover for the BBQ, somewhere the kids can sit out of the sun and you can sit with a coffee that doesn’t go warm in five minutes.

We don’t do high-pressure quotes or disappear after the deposit. We turn up, we build it properly, and we look after you like family — before, during and long after the job’s done.

Our pergola styles

We build the pergola that suits your home and how you want to use the space — not whatever’s quickest for us. Here’s what we work with.

Timber pergolas

There’s nothing like a timber pergola for warmth and character. We build in quality Australian hardwoods — Blackbutt, Spotted Gum, Merbau and Ironbark — chosen to handle Sydney’s sun and weather and to match or complement your existing deck. A timber pergola ages beautifully and feels solid underfoot and overhead in a way nothing else quite matches.

Aluminium & Colorbond pergolas

If low-maintenance is the priority, powder-coated aluminium and Colorbond pergolas are hard to beat. They won’t warp, rot or need oiling, they come in a full range of colours to match your roof and trims, and they’re built to shrug off the weather for decades. A great option for busy households that want the result without the upkeep.

Polycarbonate pergolas

When you want to keep the rain off without darkening the house behind it, a polycarbonate roof is the answer. We build with quality sheeting like Ampelite and Palram EZ Glaze, which lets soft, diffused light through while blocking the harsh UV — so the space underneath stays bright and the rooms inside don’t lose their light. Twin-wall and tinted options take the heat and glare down further, and it’s a lighter, more budget-friendly cover than a fully insulated roof. A smart choice over decks, walkways and entertaining areas where you’re chasing shelter without the shade.

Louvred & opening-roof pergolas

Want shade when it’s hot and sun when it’s not? An adjustable louvred roof lets you open the roof to let the light in, angle the louvres to control the sun through the day, and close it up tight when the rain comes through. It’s the most flexible pergola you can own — effectively an outdoor room you can tune to the weather.

Insulated-roof pergolas

For year-round comfort, an insulated roof panel keeps the heat off in summer and holds warmth in the cooler months, while cutting the noise of rain overhead right down. Ideal if you’re covering an alfresco or outdoor kitchen you plan to use no matter the season.

Attached or freestanding?

Most pergolas fall into one of two camps, and the right choice usually comes down to your house and your yard:

Attached pergolas connect to your home — over a deck, patio or alfresco — and feel like a true extension of the living space. This is the classic “add a room” pergola.

Freestanding pergolas sit out in the garden, over a pool, a spa or an entertaining area, and become a destination of their own.

We’ll walk your space with you and tell you straight which makes sense — including any council or engineering considerations — before you commit to anything.

What a pergola costs in Sydney

The honest answer is: it depends. Pergola cost in Sydney comes down to a handful of things.

  • Size — the footprint and the height.
  • Material — timber, aluminium/Colorbond, or a louvred/insulated roof system.
  • Roof type — open rafters, solid roofing, insulated panel or adjustable louvres.
  • Attached vs freestanding — and what we’re fixing to.
  • Site and access — a flat backyard is a different job to a steep or tight-access site.
  • Approvals — whether your build needs council approval or qualifies as exempt development.

Most of the pergolas we build land between $600 and $1200 a square metres to supply and install, depending on size and roof type.
Either way, every quote we give is itemised and fixed — no vague allowances, no surprises halfway through.

How we build your pergola

  1. Free on-site consultation. We come to you, look at the space, and talk through how you actually want to use it.
    2. Design & itemised quote. We put together a design and a clear, fixed-price quote — every line spelled out so you know exactly what you’re paying for.
    3. Approvals & engineering. Where it’s needed, we handle the engineering certificates and point you through any council or exempt-development requirements.
    4. The build. We turn up when we say we will, keep the site tidy, and build it properly the first time.
    5. Handover & aftercare. We walk you through the finished pergola, and we’re still here if you ever need us.

Often a pergola can be built as exempt development if it meets the size, height and boundary rules — but it depends on your property and your council. We’ll tell you upfront whether your pergola needs approval, and we handle the engineering certificates where they’re required.

Most pergolas take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks on site, depending on size, material and roof type. We’ll give you a clear timeframe with your quote and stick to it.

Timber wins on warmth and character; aluminium and Colorbond win on low maintenance. If you love the look of natural wood and don’t mind the occasional oil, go timber. If you’d rather build it and forget it, go aluminium. We’ll talk you through both honestly for your situation.

Yes — attaching a pergola over an existing deck is one of the most common jobs we do. We’ll check the deck structure first to make sure it’ll carry the load, and engineer the fixings properly.

We do — and it’s the best way to do it. Building the deck, pergola, stairs and balustrades together means one team, one schedule, and everything tied together properly from the start.
