Not every staircase should be timber. On a flight that gets full afternoon sun, or one running down to a pool, composite treads make more sense — no oiling, no splinters underfoot, and no annual re-coat. Trex Lineage and TimberTech AZEK both run cooler underfoot than hardwood, which matters on bare feet in January.
The trade-off is honest: composite can’t be sanded back and refinished the way hardwood can, and the up-front cost is higher. What you’re buying is fifteen years of not thinking about it.

External Staircase Regulations in Sydney

Step dimensions (rise and going)
For residential stairs, the NCC sets consistent limits so every step feels the same as you climb:
- Risers (the height of each step): between 115mm and 190mm
- Goings (the depth of each tread): between 240mm and 355mm
- The rise-and-going relationship: twice the riser plus the going (2R + G) must fall between 550mm and 700mm
- Consistency: risers and goings must stay uniform throughout a flight, so there are no surprise steps
- Flights: a maximum of 18 risers in a single flight before a landing, and at least two risers per flight
Treads, nosings and gaps
- Treads must have a slip-resistant finish or a non-slip strip at the nosing — important for Sydney’s wet weather
- Any gap between treads or risers must not allow a 125mm sphere to pass through, which protects young children
Balustrades and handrails
Wherever there’s a fall, the stairs need protection:
- A balustrade is required wherever the drop is more than 1 metre
- Balustrade height must be at least 865mm measured above the stair nosings, and at least 1 metre alongside landings, decks and balconies
- Openings in the balustrade must not allow a 125mm sphere to pass through
- Where the drop exceeds 4 metres, the design must avoid climbable elements in the 150mm–760mm zone
- A handrail is required to at least one side of the flight, set between 865mm and 1 metre above the nosings
Council approval
Depending on height, location and your property, an external staircase may fall under exempt development, qualify for a Complying Development Certificate, or require a Development Application through your local council — and heritage listings or bushfire zones can change the requirements. How long does a custom staircase take to build?

A standalone staircase is a different build — most take five to ten days on site, and often longer before that. There are footings and piers to set, sometimes excavation, and on some blocks we're cutting away rock before anything else happens. The substructure can be steel or timber, the treads and risers timber, composite, aluminium, steel, concrete or stone, and the handrails go on last. Site access and getting materials in are frequently the constraint, not the build itself.
