Types of Balustrade and Handrail Materials
Not sure whether you need balustrades for decking or a handrail or both? You’re not alone. Here is the difference between the two in simple terms:
- Handrails are what you grip with your hand for support, and they’re commonly used on stairs or ramps.
- Balustrades are the entire railing system, usually made of vertical posts called balusters. They come with a handrail on top and are meant to prevent falls from decks, balconies, and staircases.
We have balustrades for decking with a modern, low-maintenance finish or natural timber charm.

Balustrade Safety & Compliance in NSW
When your deck, balcony or landing sits more than a metre above the ground, a compliant balustrade isn’t a nice-to-have — it’s a safety requirement under the National Construction Code (NCC). Getting it right protects your family and keeps your project sailing through certification without nasty surprises. Here’s what the rules ask for, and how we make sure every balustrade we build meets them.
Minimum height. Wherever the drop is one metre or more, the barrier must be at least 1,000mm high above the finished deck surface. On stair flights, the handrail sits at 865mm measured above the nosing of the treads.
Gap spacing. No opening in the balustrade may allow a 125mm sphere to pass through. That’s why we space vertical balusters, set glass panels and tension wire systems to stay safely inside that limit.
Anti-climb zone. Where the deck is more than 4 metres above the ground, we avoid climbable horizontal elements between 150mm and 760mm above the floor, so young children can’t use the balustrade as a ladder. This is where a vertical or glass design really earns its place.
Materials engineered to standard. Glass balustrades use Grade A safety glass to AS 1288. Aluminium and steel systems are engineered to carry the loads set out in AS 1170. We design to suit your situation — pool surrounds, exposed coastal sites and high decks all have their own considerations.
We handle the compliance so you don’t have to. We design, build and document your balustrade to meet the relevant requirements and coordinate with your certifier — so you get a balustrade that’s safe, certifiable and looks the part.
This is a general guide only. Final requirements are confirmed against the current NCC and your project’s certifier.

Custom desogned Powder-Coated Aluminium Balustrades
If you want a balustrade that looks sharp, shrugs off the weather and almost never asks anything of you, powder-coated aluminium is hard to beat. It’s become one of our most-requested balustrades for exactly that reason — all the strength and clean lines you want around a deck, with none of the rust, rot or repainting.
A finish that lasts. Powder coating bonds a tough, even colour layer to the aluminium that resists fading, chipping and peeling far better than wet paint. It stands up to Australian sun and salt air, which makes it a favourite for coastal and exposed sites across Sydney, Wollongong and the Southern Highlands.
Colours to match your home. Choose from the full range of popular architectural finishes — matte black, monument, surfmist, woodland grey and more — so your balustrade can melt into a modern facade or stand out as a feature. Custom colours are available on request.
Genuinely low-maintenance. No sanding, no resealing, no painting. A wash with soapy water a few times a year is all it takes to keep it looking new — year after year.
Custom-made to suit your deck. We fabricate to your deck’s exact run — straight runs, stairs, slopes and corners — with vertical infill that keeps it child- and pet-safe and fully compliant. Light, strong and engineered to the loads in AS 1170, aluminium gives you steel-like strength without the rust.
What does a powder-coated aluminium balustrade cost? Price comes down to the total lineal metres, the height, and how many stairs, corners and level changes are involved. As a rough guide, powder-coated aluminium sits in the mid-range — more affordable than glass, and far cheaper to own over time than timber once you account for the painting and upkeep you’ll never have to do. Expect roughly beyween $600 and $1200 per linear metre. For an exact figure we’ll measure up and give you a fixed quote with no surprises.
