What is Merbau Timber?
Merbau hardwood, also known as ipil wood or kwila, is from the Intsia bijuga tree (commonly known Johnstone River teak, Pacific teak and scrub mahogany). It is a flowering tree native to the Indo-Pacific region and found in Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific Islands and all the way to India. In its natural habitat, the tree can grow to up to 40 metres in height with a trunk diameter of 0.6 meters and often forms an overarching canopy above the forest floor.
Merbau is known for its durability (as a Class 1 Timber for use above ground) and termite-resistant properties, making it great for use as a construction and building material for outdoor flooring and decks, and indoor and outdoor furniture all over the world. As Merbau decking timber is typically sourced in commercial amounts from tropical forests across South-East Asia, we do our best to ensure we work with suppliers who can confirm the Merbau timber is sourced ethically – doing our part for the environment. Due to its high value-for-money and durability, Merbau timber is an excellent cost-effective option for decking which lasts for over 25 years (some up to 50 years) if properly maintained.
The colour of Merbau timber is more reddish-brown in colour with a beautiful grain, full of Tanning Oil (natural oils) which makes it resistant to splitting and cracking. A popular option for our Merbau decking Sydney builds is the application of paint, or a stain and polish to seal-in its amazing colour.
The Urbanarch Building team are experts in working with A-Grade and Kiln-Dried Merbau decking timber in Sydney. With its high-durability, sturdiness and striking colour, a Merbau deck is a perfect addition to your backyard.
